International expansion

Expanding your US business overseas

There are many key aspects to consider when looking to expand your business internationally. On this page, you can find tools and insights to guide you through the challenges of international expansion.

In today’s ever increasing global market place, organisations often look to enter new markets by setting up operations in new jurisdictions - whether through organic growth or strategic M&A activity. When expanding into new territories, it is important you get the right legal advice, not only to make you more effective from the outset, but also to ensure that you don’t run into problems later on.

International Expansion Guide

Our International Expansion Guide is designed to steer and support companies looking to expand internationally in multiple jurisdictions. The aim of the guide is to provide high level information on some frequently asked questions across the range of legal topics companies typically ask us when looking to launch in a new market.

The information in this guide was correct as of its most recent update in 2020, however laws change frequently and it should not be relied upon as legal advice.

Key items to consider when expanding globally

At Taylor Wessing, we work with our clients as strategic partners - we not only understand the issues you face as a corporate entity, but as we are industry specialists as well as lawyers, we also understand the specific market challenges you will face as you expand internationally and can help you structure your business accordingly.

  • seeking local legal expertise
  • starting preparations early enough
  • deciding on your immigration and local hiring strategy
  • understanding if you need to set up a local subsidiary
  • protecting your intellectual property, deciding on the most appropriate method of trading (and seeking appropriate commercial and tax advice)
  • checking compliance, data privacy and regulatory requirements
  • if considering an acquisition, taking the appropriate due diligence measures.

You can schedule a casual chat with one of our experts during the "Friday office hours" to discuss the above or any other questions you may have about the "do's and don'ts" when expanding internationally.

Our San Francisco business office

The United States remains one of our focus markets, particularly within our core sectors of tech, media & communications and life sciences & healthcare and venture capital.

Recognising the importance of the US market, we opened business offices in San Francisco and New York in 2014. With a team drawn from the UK and Germany with extensive experience across M&A, international expansion, commercial arrangements and data protection & privacy, we offer advice to some of the largest international tech and life sciences corporations. Additionally, each year, we assist between 50 to 75 North American growth companies on their global expansion plans.

While we don't practice US law, our team on the ground in the US works closely with Taylor Wessing lawyers from across the globe to support start-ups, scale-ups and multinational corporations on their expansion, M&A, capital raises and commercial needs throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
